The conference “What is Africa to me now? The continent and its literary diasporas”, which was held at the University of Liège from 21 to 23 March 2013, brought together around a hundred researchers from very different horizons. The question at the heart of the meeting was examined from multiple geographical, generic and disciplinary angles which, for all their impressive variety, turned out to complete and enrich each other in many ways. In order to enhance the dialogue between theoretical and artistic reflections, four public events took place during the conference, involving three creative writers – Chika Unigwe (Nigeria/Belgium), Jackie Kay (UK) and Caryl Phillips (UK/St Kitts) – as well as the photographer Johny Pitts (UK). Here are a few short extracts from the lectures or readings given by these four speakers who are part of the African diaspora. They each share with us their own personal vision of their ancestral continent and of the role that it has played in the construction of their diasporic identity. |
Le colloque « What is Africa to me now ? The continent and its literary diasporas », qui s’est déroulé à l’Université de Liège du 21 au 23 mars 2013, a réuni une petite centaine de chercheurs issus d’horizons très différents. Ceux-ci ont examiné la question au cœur de la réunion scientifique sous des angles géographiques, génériques et disciplinaires divers qui, malgré leur impressionnante variété, se sont révélés mutuellement enrichissants. Dans le souci de renforcer le dialogue entre réflexions théoriques et artistiques, quatre événements publics furent consacrés au sein du colloque à trois écrivains : Chika Unigwe (Nigeria/Belgique), Jackie Kay (Royaume-Uni) et Caryl Phillips (Royaume-Uni/St Kitts), auxquels est venu se joindre le photographe Johny Pitts (Royaume-Uni). Nous vous proposons ici de courts extraits des interventions de ces quatre orateurs issus de la diaspora africaine. Ils nous livrent chacun leur vision personnelle du continent de leurs ancêtres et du rôle que celui-ci joue dans l’élaboration de leur identité diasporique. |

Daria Tunca teaches English language at the University of Liège. Her research focuses on the stylistic aspects of contemporary Nigerian literature.
