Chika Unigwe was born in Nigeria in 1974, and moved to Belgium in 1995. She holds a PhD in literature from the University of Leiden in The Netherlands, but she is above all known to the general public as a creative writer, particularly thanks to her three novels: The Phoenix (2007), On Black Sisters’ Street (2009) and Night Dancer (2012). These texts were originally written in English but were first published in Dutch translation – an unusual fact that greatly contributed to the author’s popularity on the Flemish and Dutch literary scenes.

Chika Unigwe’s work explores themes such as immigration, loneliness, prostitution, and gender issues. In the context of the “What is Africa to me now?” conference, the author was present in Liège to share her thoughts on the representation of Nigeria and Belgium in her work. It is precisely in these two countries that On Black Sisters’ Street, her second novel, is set. The book, which has received several prestigious literary prizes, traces the lives of four African women who work as prostitutes in Antwerp’s red-light district. Écrits en anglais, ces textes ont tout d’abord fait l’objet de publications en traduction néerlandaise, fait inhabituel qui a contribué à asseoir la notoriété de l’écrivaine sur la scène littéraire en Flandre et aux Pays-Bas.

Les œuvres de Chika Unigwe explorent des thématiques telles que l’immigration, la solitude, la prostitution, et les relations entre hommes et femmes. À l’occasion du colloque « What is Africa to me now? », l’auteure est venue à Liège partager ses réflexions sur la représentation du Nigeria et de la Belgique dans son imaginaire. C’est précisément dans ces deux pays que se déroule son second roman, On Black Sisters’ Street, qui retrace le parcours de quatre femmes africaines travaillant comme prostituées à Anvers.
