Johny Pitts is a multi-talented Englishman, from Sheffield, in Yorkshire: he is a writer, a journalist, a musician, a photographer and a TV presenter for such channels as the BBC, ITV, MTV, Sky One HD and Channel 4. In 2008 one of his texts was awarded the Decibel Penguin Prize. He is now putting the final touches to his first book, at once a travelogue and a photographic essay, in which he explores the identity issues around the black presence in Europe. He took part with Caryl Phillips in a photographic project entitled “A Bend in the River”, where both artists convey their visions of the Thames and of London as a city transformed by migration.

During the “What is Africa to me now?” conference Johny Pitts gave a talk entitled “An Afropean Odyssey: A Black European Travel Narrative” which complemented the photographic exhibition that was held at the University of Liège from 21 to 28 March 2013. In the video he explains what Africa means to him, as an Afropean artist.

Il termine actuellement son premier livre, un ouvrage combinant récit de voyage et reportage photographique, dans lequel il explore la présence noire en Europe et les questions identitaires qui y sont liées.  Il a participé avec Caryl Phillips à un projet photographique intitulé « A Bend in the River », dans lequel les deux artistes livrent leur vision de la Tamise et du Londres d’aujourd’hui transformé par l’immigration.

Lors du colloque « What is Africa to me now ? » Johny Pitts a présenté une communication intitulée « An Afropean Odyssey: A Black European Travel Narrative » au cours de laquelle il a contextualisé l’exposition d’une sélection de ses photos qui s’est tenue à l’Université de Liège du 21 au 28 mars 2013.
